Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) is an emergency procedure that combines chest compressions often with artificial ventilation in an effort to manually preserve intact brain function until further measures are taken to restore spontaneous blood circulation and breathing in a person who is in cardiac arrest.

HOW TO DO CPR:

Check the scene and the person. Make sure the scene is safe, then tap the person on the shoulder and shout "Are you OK?" to ensure that the person needs help. Call 112 or an ambulance.

Open the airway. With the person lying on his or her back, tilt the head back slightly to lift the chin. Check for breathing. Listen carefully, for no more than 10 seconds, for sounds of breathing. (Occasional gasping sounds do not equate to breathing.) If there is no breathing begin CPR.

Place the heel of your hand on the breastbone at the centre of the person’s chest and press down by 5 to 6 cm at a steady rate 100 to 120 compression a minute.

Position yourself with your shoulders above your hands. Using your body weight (not just arm), pres straight down by 5 to 6 cm on their chest. Keeping your hands on their chest, release the compression and allow the chest to return to its original positition. Repeat these compressions until the ambulance arrives.
